Our community of volunteers make the difference.

A Call for Volunteers

Since 1975, the Mercer Island Youth & Family Services Thrift Shop has had a long history of volunteer participation. In fact, for many years, all operations were volunteer-powered. This history was born out of a community passion to make mental health and school-based services accessible and affordable for all Mercer Islanders, across all generations. Our core of Thrift Shop volunteers, committed to the mission of MIYFS, have been crucial in making these programs and services possible. We are seeking additional volunteer assistance to build back revenue for MIYFS by adding additional sales days and increasing our online sales presence.

  • Love fashion? We are looking for volunteers to sort, hang, tag, and display clothing, shoes, handbags, and accessories. Any of these tasks can be divided. We work as a team to move items that are in season onto the sales floor.

  • Our modern point of sale system is easy to learn. Just scan the barcoded tags, select the payment, and carefully bag or box up your customer’s purchases. We’ve instituted contactless payments by only accepting debit/credit cards and mobile device payments. If you can volunteer with some regularity, the Thrift Shop staff will provide training and practice.

Cashier shifts are typically scheduled in three-hour blocks. A lunch break is provided for volunteers that work a longer shift. Building a reliable team of cashiers is essential in adding business days and increasing revenue for MIYFS.

  • Our community of friendly volunteers make a difference as they greet customers, represent promotions, and help with periodic upkeep of the sales floor. This essential job helps MITS stand out as a destination thrift shop, and our customers look forward to returning frequently.

  • Customers love shopping at MITS because we offer in-season, quality items at value pricing. Our inventory system is carefully managed with a seasonal, storage-to-sales floor timeline.

We begin collecting and storing Halloween, Christmas, Chanukah, and other special items as soon as the holiday or season has ended. This job is a year-round labor of love at MITS.

  • The Thrift Shop’s website sales are growing and we’re ready to recruit more volunteers to help research, photograph, and launch special items for sale.

Certain tasks can be divided, and some of this work can be done from home. We’re looking for skilled volunteers with an interest in helping us grow this line of business.
